Update - Wellington City Protests - 21 Feb
This afternoon I met with the Ministry of Education and Police to discuss concerns that have been raised by whānau and members of our community.
We will continue to work collaboratively with the Ministry and Police to assess the current protest situation and the impact this is having on ākonga and staff safety and wellbeing.
We have been advised that:
● There will be an increase in visible Police patrols around the school and train station especially when ākonga are travelling to and from school to ensure the safety of all ākonga and staff. ● Māori wardens are being based around the station to minimise any disruptive or anti-social behaviour.
● Police have established night patrols that include monitoring our school grounds to ensure no unwelcome guests and police have been given the delegations to trespass on our behalf. ● Advice remains to avoid Molesworth Street.
● We have received assurances that emergency vehicles are still able to access our site. As you can appreciate this is an evolving situation and we will constantly reassess and review our response and keep you up to date.
A reminder we will continue to have our own security guards and staff take students to the station and buses after school where required. We will also continue to have security at our gates before and after school to keep our students safe.
While it is safe to come to school -we appreciate some families are choosing to keep ākonga at home - and just ask that you keep us informed of your decisions so that we know where students are.
We again ask that you inform your student that passing by or entering Parliament grounds is not safe as it is a fluid situation.
Thanks for your patience and continued support.
Be Mercy.
