MUSIC

St Mary’s College Music Department offers a diverse range of musical experiences.

We welcome musicians and singers of any ability level and enjoy the opportunity of taking part in a range of school and community events.

Our 2022 highlights include some beautiful performances at school masses, a workshop with NZ Trio, The Big Sing, Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival, our first Soiree, Arts Concerts and our Y13 recital.

Itinerant Music Lessons

We have an excellent group of experienced itinerant music teachers at the College.

Students are offered small group lessons which run during the school day.

Priority is given to Y9 and option Music students, and then any other keen musicians who are active in our ensemble groups.

In 2022 we are offering: violin, viola, cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, guitar, drums, bass, trumpet and trombone. Option Music students also have access to piano and singing lessons.

Music groups

Animato Strings - we run a busy stringed instrument programme with new learners encouraged into the large ensemble almost from the beginning. Our string tutor carefully plans parts for all students so that beginner to advanced players are catered for. They work on a variety of pieces from Disney and contemporary favourites to epic classical pieces.

SMC Band - one of our multi talented band tutors runs a lunchtime band which is open to students of different year groups. They cover a range of different pieces and often build skills across multiple instruments.

Wind Ensemble - this group is for players of any wind instrument with parts created for specific ability levels. They work on a range of pieces and focus on development of their instrumental skill and ensemble awareness.

SMC Performance Choir - this choir is open to any enthusiastic singer.  They work on a range of styles and are beginning to add some choreographed songs to their repertoire.  The choir takes part in the Big Sing most years, school events and other community events.

Orchestra Vivo - this is our chamber ensemble which is open to a wide range of classical instruments. Orchestra Vivo often combines with Animato strings or Wind Ensemble for events.

Chamber Music - these groups are usually formed out of the music options classes.  They get many performance opportunities at school and community events.  These are usually our more experienced musicians who are looking for a challenge.
